Ephraim Bird was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England in 1842, the son of Thomas Bird and Elizabeth Hopkins. With wife Anne Chetwynd (b. 1845) he had five children; Herbert Ephraim (b. 1871), Henry Ernest (b. 1873), Joseph William (b. 1875), Alfred Edward (b. 1876), Amy Lizzie (b. 1878) and Frank Chetwynd (b. 1885). Both Ephraim and Anne were grocers.

In 1883 the family migrated to Australia, leaving Plymouth on 15 March 1883 and arriving in Townsville on May 12 aboard the British India steamship Merkara. The Merkara stopped briefly in Brisbane on May 11.

Ephraim passed away on 26 June 1919 in Queen St, Ayr.
