Just found this site and am not sure if my question is allowed?
Am searching for information on my great grandmother Eliza Croft Moyle born to John Wills Moyle and Mary Richards Sampson about 1825 in St Agnes near Truro, Cornwall. She and her brothers came out to South Australia in the 1840's to bring mining machinery to the Burra tin mines. Only brother I have found is Samuel who was born 1810,same place as Eliza. Thanks for any help. Val.

Val,
Questions are always more than welcome. Most of the Moyle information I have at the moment is from the above comments; I'll put that in a separate gedcom so it's easier to sort through. However, those names don't ring any bells (with me in any case - anyone else?).

The actual Court Proceeding with reference to Esther Moyle is as follows:-
Esther Moyle a widow was charge with having stolen a pair of shoes , the proerty of John Colenso a Cornish Jew . The prosecutor is a cordwainer , thus residing in the township of Redruth , and his wife and daughter was kepping a
stand in the market place. On the 29th October 1842 they were in the market place in Redruth ,
when the prisoner and several other women came
up to the stall in question , and thus made enquiries as to the prices of some shoes .
While Mrs Colenso the Jewess was attending the
other women , her said daughter saw the prisoner
secrete some shoes; and after she had left the
stall in question , she was followed and thus stopped by Mrs Colenso , pushed her to one side
and then charged with theft . She at once denied the theft , but Mrs Colenso pushed aside her gown and thus found a pair of shoes hanging to her arm
The daugher said their was another pair and placed her hand into the prisoners pocket hole , where she found the other pair of shoes .
Mr Bennallack who appeared for the prisoner and ventured to asked the younger witness a question or two , see the rest of this case tomorrow .
Posted by: john penrice edwards | August 19, 2008 5:41 AM
A continuation of the Moyle case:-
Mr Bennallack thus appeared for Esther Moyle the
said prisonernd ventured to ask the younger witness a question or two, but at once informed him by a knowing wink of her said eye , that she
was in no way cowed , Mr Justice John thus caustioned him that he better take care . Mr Bennallack appeared to think so too , and dealt
gently with Mrs Colenso 's daughter as to what
really happened in the market place .
At the close of this particular unfortunate case
it appeared that the impoverished prisoner had been in goal , and that her husband Mr Stephen
Moyle had had a accidental fall on his head and met his sudden and instant demise , and was left
a widow with seven children to bring up .
The prisoner was found guilty of petty theft ,
but the prosecutor strongly recommended her to
the mercy of the Court .She was thus given two
weeks Hard Labour.
This means she was arrested during October 1842 ,
Her husband was already dead before October 1842 , Stephen Moyle was still living in 1841 according to the Census Returns for Illogan but
must have passed away between the years 1841 to
the Autumn of 1842 at Illogan or Wendron parish .
Esther Moyle now Mrs Esther Penna is buried at
Peranzabuloe , near the parish church .
I hope this information is of value as to my kinsman . John Penrice Edwards .

Just to let you know that Esther Moyle 's trial
took place on the 13th and 14th of January 1843 ;
this information is thus recorded in the Cornish
and West of England and Cornish Gazette .
Hester moyle's husband Stephen Moyle did not pass
away for 1847 or 1848 , but for the year 1842 , but where I do not know , I think he is buried
with in the parish's of Illogan or Gwennap .
According to the Census Returns for Illogan 1841 , the family was found living in Illogan
for this is where Stephen Moyle must have met his
demise ; they the family were living in Rough Street in Illogan .
I am now researching as to Mary Gill came from
who was the grandmother to Stephen Moyle senior
and the results are promising .

To John Penrice Edwards.
I am descended from the Colenso family and the John Colenso you mentioned was my first cousin 5 times removed. How did you arrive at the conclusion that he was Jewish? I have been researching the family for 12 years and have never found any indication of a Jewish heritage. The accounts of your relative's court case don't mention it.
